Law clubs were established to provide students an opportunity to practice preparing and arguing law cases as realistically as possible. Law clubs began to be founded at Harvard in the 19th century; one of the earliest was the Marshall Club, founded in 1825. Kingman Brewster was born in Longmeadow, Massachusetts on June 17, 1919. He received his undergraduate degree from Yale in 1941 and his law degree from Harvard in 1948. Brewster taught law at Harvard from 1949-1960. He served as provost of Yale from 1961-1963 and was president of Yale from 1963-1977. Brewster was U.S. ambassador to Great Britain from 1977-1981.
